Katie Mohan, a woman from New Jersey, was almost forced to undergo a liver transplant after taking excessive turmeric supplements. Although turmeric is known for its health benefits, including anti-inflammatory effects, too much can cause serious harm.
Mohan experienced nausea, fatigue, and dark urine, leading her to seek urgent medical attention. Her liver enzyme levels were found to be 60 times above normal, indicating severe damage.
The World Health Organization suggests a safe turmeric dose of up to 3 mg per kilogram of body weight, which for Mohan meant about 200 mg daily. However, she was consuming over 2,000 mg per day.
Dr. Nikolaos Pyrsopoulos from NYU explained that without treatment, Mohan’s condition could have worsened to full liver failure. Fortunately, after nearly a week in the hospital, her liver began healing.
This incident highlights the importance of using supplements responsibly and consulting healthcare providers before starting new supplements.
