Lightning Strike Kills 32 Dairy Cows in Missouri

Jared and Misty Blackwelder, farmers from Springfield, Missouri, faced a heartbreaking loss in 2017 when a lightning strike killed all 32 of their dairy cows. After feeding them, they allowed the cows to graze despite storm clouds gathering.

Hours later, the couple returned to find their entire herd dead, struck by lightning and lying together in the pasture. The Wright County Missouri Farm Bureau shared photos and asked for prayers for the family.

Stan Cody, president of the Missouri Farm Bureau, said lightning strikes on cattle are known but rarely affect so many animals at once. A local vet confirmed the cause and noted that the cows likely huddled together for shelter, making them vulnerable.

Jared shared how difficult the loss was, explaining the close relationship he had with the cows he cared for daily. The financial impact was heavy, with the value of the herd exceeding $60,000.
