Side-by-side photos of the Texas flood zone reveal the heartbreaking destruction left by the rising waters of the Guadalupe River. The flash floods hit Kerrville and surrounding areas in the early hours of July 4, causing the deaths of at least 59 people.
Fifteen of the victims were children, and rescue workers are still searching for more than 20 children who were at Camp Mystic, a summer camp that has lost power and water.
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said some missing children may simply be out of contact.
Photos shared online show the peaceful river before the flood and the same area completely underwater afterward, with only treetops visible. The river rose 23 feet in just two hours, devastating the area.
Many residents recalled a similar flood in 1987 that killed 43 people, including teenagers at a church camp. That flood was the worst in over 50 years.
Search and rescue operations continue as the community hopes for the safe return of those missing.
