A Birthday to Remember

My grandma’s 85th birthday was supposed to be a low-key affair, just a quiet dinner with the family. But my relatives had other plans. They decided to take her to the fanciest restaurant in town, not to make her happy, but to indulge in an extravagant feast at her expense. I knew something was off when I overheard my cousin Katie scheming with her brother Mark to leave me with the bill.

They thought I’d be an easy target, assuming I’d foot the bill without complaint. But I wasn’t having it. I knew Grandma would insist on paying, but I also knew she’d be happy to let me take care of her. What I didn’t know was that my family would stoop so low as to abandon her at the table when the bill arrived.

The dinner was a lavish affair, with wine bottles, expensive meats, and every side dish on the menu. Grandma was beaming, but I could see the calculation in my family’s eyes. They were counting on me to pay up. When the bill arrived, they put on a show, feigning shock and claiming they couldn’t afford to pay. I let them think they’d gotten away with it, but I’d already made arrangements with the restaurant manager, my old college friend Eric.

As Grandma sat alone at the table, looking worried and scared, I knew I’d made the right decision. I’d paid for our share of the meal, and Eric would take care of the rest. When my family started calling me, angry and accusatory, I just smiled. They’d learn that trying to take advantage of Grandma’s kindness wouldn’t go unpunished.

The next year, Grandma and I celebrated her birthday in style, just the two of us. We went to a nice, quiet restaurant, and I made sure to leave my phone on silent. No drama, no stress, just a lovely evening with the woman I love. My family might have underestimated me, but they wouldn’t make the same mistake again.
