Step Back in Time: Explore the ‘Jesus Boat’ and Lake Galilee

A remarkable discovery beneath the waters of the Sea of Galilee has brought history alive for travelers and believers. Known as the ‘Jesus Boat,’ this 2,000-year-old fishing vessel was found in 1986 by brothers Moshe and Yuval Lufan during a drought, and it provides a fascinating window into life during the time of Jesus.

Jesus, a central religious figure believed to have been born between 6 and 4 BC, made his home in the regions around Galilee and Jerusalem. Today, many visit the Sea of Galilee as part of spiritual pilgrimage, where the watercraft was found.

Although there’s no proof Jesus ever sailed specifically on this boat, its design is typical of the era’s fishing vessels. It is 27 feet long, has a flat bottom ideal for shallow waters, and was built from a variety of woods, including cedar, reflecting the materials available to craftsmen.

The discovery sparked extensive archaeological work, with experts working non-stop for nearly two weeks to recover the boat from the lakebed. Conservation efforts preserved the vessel, which now rests at the Yigal Alon Museum at Kibbutz Ginosar, where visitors can learn about its significance.

The museum also offers boat tours on the Sea of Galilee aboard replicas of the ancient vessels, allowing visitors to experience the waters just as people did two millennia ago.

For those interested in history, faith, and adventure, the ‘Jesus Boat’ and the lifestyle it represents offer a unique way to connect with the past amidst the beauty of Israel’s landscapes.
