Scientists are raising alarms about the possible consequences of Thwaites Glacier melting in Antarctica, warning that major cities across the world could face flooding. Known as the ‘Doomsday Glacier,’ it contains enough ice to significantly raise sea levels, exacerbating the already urgent climate crisis.
The glacier acts as a stopper for the larger Antarctic ice sheet, and its collapse could cause sea levels to rise by as much as 10 feet, threatening cities like London, New York, and Bangkok. These global hubs, famous for culture and commerce, would face devastating impacts.
After years of research, including studies since 2018 by the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC), scientists have found unknown subglacial lakes contributing to faster melting than previously understood. A report published in March 2025 shows that this process accelerates glacier retreat, increasing the chances of collapse within 200 years.
Professor Noel Gourmelen, the lead author, noted the surprising scale of water flow underneath the glacier, which greatly boosts ocean-driven melting.
Scientists are also worried about the impact of record heat in the Southern Hemisphere this year, which is likely speeding the glacier’s decay. Dr. Alastair Graham cautions that collapse could raise sea levels by around 65 centimeters in a relatively short time.
This research highlights a growing climate emergency, revealing how interconnected the fate of faraway glaciers is with urban centers worldwide.
