On Jean’s birthday, my mother-in-law, Jacqueline, gave her a beautiful pink bicycle with flowers and streamers that made Jean glow with happiness. It felt like a rare moment of generosity from Jacqueline. But just days later, Jacqueline unexpectedly came and took the bike away. Her excuse was that her granddaughter Mia had wanted one, and Jean apparently didn’t need it “that badly.” Watching Jean cry as the bike disappeared was painful.
Later that evening, I invited Jacqueline to dinner to thank her but also to share how much her actions hurt Jean. We decided to cancel the surprise gift we planned for Jacqueline and instead opened a savings account for Jean. I told Jacqueline, “This way, Jean can always have something to call her own.”
By the next day, the bike reappeared. Jean’s laughter filled the house again, brighter than ever. Sometimes, quiet strength and care teach lessons more powerful than harsh words—the kind that come with streamers and a ringing bell.
