Charged for Babysitting: When Family Boundaries Are Crossed

I’ve always cherished my role as a grandmother, so when my daughter-in-law Jessica asked me to watch my grandson Luke for a weekend, I gladly agreed. I packed my things and looked forward to a fun, loving time with Luke while giving Jessica and my son Aaron a break.

But after the weekend, I found a note from Jessica with an itemized bill. It started with small charges for snacks and diapers but soon included fees for TV use, water, and even bathroom access. I was shocked and deeply hurt. I had cared for Luke out of love, not for payment.

I felt like my kindness was unappreciated and that I was being treated like a guest who had to pay for everything. I wrote Jessica a calm but firm message expressing my feelings and asking for respect. Her response was short and lacked a real apology.

Since then, our relationship feels strained. I still babysit Luke occasionally, but the sadness remains. I question whether I’m overreacting or if my feelings are valid. After all the love I’ve given, I never imagined this treatment. I’m now looking for advice on how to move forward.
