The Bible’s True Message on Age Differences in Relationships

There’s a false belief that the Bible forbids relationships with large age differences. In reality, Scripture does not judge couples based on age but on the love and respect they share, and their faithfulness to God. What matters is the quality of the relationship, not the years between partners.

The Bible’s core message is about the heart and living in God’s love. Jesus’ sacrifice, as explained in 2 Corinthians 5:21, was God’s way of taking on humanity’s sins to restore us. Pope Benedict XVI described this as God turning against Himself out of love. Jesus also commands us to love even our enemies, inviting us into a deep and personal connection with God.

This contrasts with the shallow curiosity of the Athenians in Acts 17:21, who sought novelty without meaning. Today, distractions like social media can keep us from true spiritual life. God asks us to focus on what truly matters: living in harmony with Him and showing His love in our actions. The paschal mystery changes how we pray and how we live.

This deeper faith awakens compassion for those who suffer—from war victims to the vulnerable unborn and elderly, and those harmed by violence or environmental damage. In a world focused on profit, we must remember to share our blessings. Charity fights selfishness and helps build justice.

Young innovators will soon gather in Assisi to explore creating a fairer economy. The Church teaches that loving political action is necessary. Pope Pius XI said working for the common good is true charity.

This Lent, let us ask Mary Most Holy to soften our hearts to God’s call for healing. May we embrace the paschal mystery and be transformed by grace, becoming the salt and light Christ calls us to be in a world longing for truth.
