Ksenia Karelina Shares Her Story After Prison Release in US-Russia Swap

Ksenia Karelina, once a ballerina and dual citizen of the US and Russia, has spoken about her life-changing experience after being sentenced to 12 years in a Russian penal colony. Arrested in 2023 for donating to a charity helping Ukraine on the day Russia invaded, she admitted guilt in a closed trial. Thankfully, she was freed in a prisoner exchange and returned to the US in April.

In a recent interview with NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo, Karelina described the mental and physical challenges she faced but also the strength she gained. She said the ordeal deepened her belief in the importance of kindness and love to get through tough times.

Her boyfriend, Chris Van Heerden, remained her biggest supporter throughout her imprisonment. He fought for her release and greeted her warmly upon her return, calling her experience a nightmare. Karelina credits him with helping her keep hope alive.

Now back in the US, she wants to help others who are struggling, using the tools she gained during her difficult journey and the support of Chris to move forward at her own pace.
