I was set up on a blind date with Eric, a friend of my friend’s boyfriend. The date started off well, with Eric being charming and courteous. He brought me roses and a thoughtful gift, and we had a great conversation. However, things took a turn for the worse when he sent me an invoice for the date, itemizing everything from the flowers to the conversation.
The invoice was ridiculous, with charges for things like “opening car door” and “engaging conversation.” I was shocked and amused by the audacity of the request. My friend Mia and her boyfriend Chris were equally shocked and amused, and they decided to take matters into their own hands.
Chris created a mock invoice in response, listing absurd charges for things like “introducing you to a gorgeous woman” and “not exposing you to the entire internet.” We sent it to Eric, and his response was immediate and angry. But I wasn’t interested in engaging with him further.
The experience was a valuable lesson in setting boundaries and knowing one’s worth. It also showed me the importance of having good friends who can provide support and humor in difficult situations. In the end, I emerged from the experience with a good story to tell and a newfound appreciation for the people in my life who truly care about me.
