Could Your Relationship Nicknames Be a Sign of Trouble? Expert Weighs In

Many couples use cute nicknames to show love, but psychologist Dr. Mark Travers warns that some of these names might actually point to problems in the relationship. While affectionate nicknames can be positive, some might serve as emotional cover-ups.

Dr. Travers highlights three nicknames that could indicate issues. “Babe” or “baby” can make you feel emotionally close too quickly because they release bonding hormones, even if true trust isn’t there, leading to attachment without real connection.

The nickname “sweetheart” can be used to dismiss your feelings. When partners say things like “Don’t worry, sweetheart,” it can make you feel like your concerns are being ignored, a behavior called emotional infantilization that can hurt your mental health.

“Angel” might be used to distract from problems. Saying “Angel, don’t be upset” after a fight can sound sweet but often avoids addressing the real conflict, a tactic known as emotional appeasement.

Dr. Travers reminds us that pet names aren’t always negative. When used with genuine love and at the right moments, they can strengthen relationships and ease tension. The important thing is the meaning and timing behind the words.
